Absolut Christmas is equal to the Absolut Joy postcard issued already twice before.

December 9, 2005 December 09, 2005 - Recent postcards from Edgar in Germany

Some of you may have lost the overview on the Edgar cards issued this autumn.
This is to provide you with a short summary of all the cards we know of incl. a short description of the background of the cards:

#7641 - Hamburg only - Absolut St. Pauli
-> equal to Absolut Party as St. Pauli is the party and red light district of Hamburg.
#7642 - Munich only - Absolut Wies’n
-> equal to Absolut Munich. “Wies’n” is the Bavarian expression for the Oktoberfest.
#7753 - Cologne only - Absolut Dom
-> two Absolut Vodka bottles next to each other representing Cologne’s famous Cathedral.
#7754 - Düsseldorf only - Absolut Aquazoo
-> equal to Absolut Treasure. “Aquazoo” is the aquarium zoo in Düsseldorf.
#7755 - Hamburg only - Absolut Steife Brise
-> equal to Absolut Chicago. “Steife Brise” is an expression for heavy, cold wind.
#7756 - Munich only - Absolut Föhn
-> equal to Absolut Chicago. A “föhn” is a warm wind phenomenon (see article dated Oct 14).
#7757 - Cologne only - Absolut Bermudadreieck
-> equal to Absolut Valentine. “Bermudadreieck” is an area in Cologne with many gay bars, discos, etc.
#7758 - Düsseldorf only - Absolut Immermannstr.
-> equal to Absolut Tokyo. Around the “Immermannstrasse” in Düsseldorf you’ll find many Japanese shops, restaurants, etc.

#7763 - Hamburg only - Absolut Kiez

-> equal to Absolut Wonderland. Munich is very close to Kitzbühel in Austria, a great winter sport location.
#7765 - Düsseldorf only - Absolut Kö

Still expected to be issued by Edgar in the near future is:

November 22, 2005 November 22, 2005 Absolut Alaaf postcard distributed in Germany

ABSOLUT ALAAF Only few people know, but there’s no country to celebrate Carnival the way Germany does! Carnival is actually called “the 5th season” and it runs each year from the 11th day of the 11th month at 11:11 a.m. until Ash Wednesday (usually in mid February).

Punctually for this year’s Nov 11, Edgar distributed the ABSOLUT ALAAF postcard (Edgar’s n° 7761).
If you are German, you’ll immediately know that this card must have been issued in Cologne and unfortunately, only in Cologne.

So what’s the background? If you’re interested, please open the link for the whole story below.Practically each region in Western and Southern Germany celebrates Carnival and in each area, it is celebrated in a different way.

The whole festivity is meant to drive away the demons of the winter time and to celebrate the time when days start getting longer again.

The most important things: Everybody is dressed up, almost everybody drinks… a lot actually… and everybody is in a good mood.
People kiss each other on the cheeks even though they have never met before, people are singing and dancing and everybody is just enjoying a good time.

A lot of events are organised, including shows with many many local comedians and often “dirty” jokes, but there are also dancing nights where you will only hear funny German music as you can do on the Oktoberfest.
There are a lot of parades in the bigger cities, too, where extremely large paper-mâché copies of famous persons, such as politicians, sportsmen, actors, etc. are showing them in embarassing situations they have been in (e.g. Boris Becker becoming a father even though he has ever “seen” the woman for approximately 5 minutes.. in a broom closet… no joke!); music bands are walking through the streets playing the classic German Carnival songs; people on trucks are throwing flowers, candy, etc. into the crowd and so on.

Cologne is probably the wildest carnival city in Germany, and everybody wants to underline that by crying out “Alaaf” or “Kölle Alaaf” all the time, meaning as much as “Cologne above all”.

The postcard issued by Edgar was originally issued as ABSOLTU INCOGNITO and shows the masked Absolut Vodka bottle (remember … everybody is dressed up in some way).

I found a two-paged and very good article on the website of the German Embassy in Ottawa, Canada.
It’s worth reading to understand how crazy Germans - who have the reputation to be stiff and to lack a sense of humour - can be.

November 18, 2005 November 18, 2005 Two different Absolut Release postcards issued in Italy

At the beginning of this week, Promocard distributed two new postcards both with the same name:

- Absolut Release (Promocard n°5850, Absolut Vodka collection n°316).
The picture of this card was created by Maya Hayuk in 2004.
- Absolut Release (Promocard n°5851, Absolut Vodka collection n°317).
This picture was created by Phil Frost in 2004.

November 18, 2005 November 18, 2005 Absolut Maximilianstr. postcard distributed in Germany

Edgar just distributed the Absolut Maximilianstr. postcard (Edgar’s n° 7760).
Again, this card is a local issue and you can only find it in Munich.

The Maximilianstr. (i.e. Maximilian Street) is the most expensive street in Munich and hosts shops of exclusive designers like Giorgio Armani, Yves St. Laurent as well as the best rated hotels of the city.

“most expensive” ? “exclusive” ? “best rated” ? I’m sure it didn’t take the designer of this card long to decide which original ad to copy … it’s obviously Absolut VIP.
